Mudra is a Sanskrit word meaning gesture, seal, attitude, or symbolic expression. Our hands have always been a natural extension of our thoughts and emotions, acting as sensitive channels through which we communicate with the world. A mudra is therefore an outward gesture that reflects an inner state of being.
The practice of mudras is often combined with other Yogic techniques such as bandhas, prāṇāyāma, mantras, āsanas, or visualisation practices. Together, they help cultivate specific states of mind while influencing the flow of energy throughout the body.
I vividly remember seeing mudras used in a Kathakali performance during a trip to India. Kathakali is a classical Indian dance-drama in which stories are told through intricate hand gestures, expressive facial movements, and the language of the eyes.
Whether in dance or in Yoga, mudras are more than symbolic gestures. They help convey emotions and intentions while also producing subtle reflexological and energetic effects, supporting the flow of vital energy throughout the body.
For anyone wishing to explore this ancient practice in greater depth, I highly recommend the book Mudrá de Mãos Dadas com o Yoga Antigo. It is an excellent resource for understanding the symbolism of hand gestures and their relationship with the philosophy and practice of Yoga.
